CHAPTER TWELVE

Resting on one elbow, Shep watched the rise and fall of Hayden’s chest.

Shit. His own chest tightened. He’d never watched anyone sleep before.

She stirred and rolled onto her side. His gaze dropped to the sweet curve of her ass. He noted she had some stubble burn on her thighs, and the image made his cock twitch. He’d had a very pleasurable time putting those marks on her. In fact, he really liked seeing his marks on her.

He wanted her again. He’d already tired her out this afternoon, and he shouldn’t need her again this soon. Besides, she needed the rest after everything she’d been through.

She’d probably wake up hungry. Maybe he should get her some food?

Rising, he walked naked to the kitchen. He took a second to check the security system. Everything was quiet, and there were no messages from Vander.

Crap. That meant they still had no solid exit plan.

But Vander would come through. He always did.

Shep checked the fridge. It was well-stocked, and there were also some cooked local dishes.

He saw pan de coco, bread made with coconut milk, and a rice and bean dish. There were also some queques, cakes made with banana. He loaded up a plate with some of all the food, then grabbed two bottles of water, then headed back into the bedroom.

He set the stuff down on the bedside table, then tied up the mosquito net. He set the plate on the bed.

Hayden woke up and rolled over with a smile. Damn, she was beautiful.

Her gaze ran down his chest. He had a few scratch marks courtesy of her nails. She lingered on his abs, before her gaze dropped to his half-hard cock. Then, her attention caught on the plate of food.

“What’s this?”

“Food.”

She rolled her eyes and propped herself up. “It looks good. You made it?”

“I plated it. There are a few local dishes in the fridge.” He pointed to the plate. “That’s pan de coco. Bread made with coconut milk.”

She tried a bite, and moaned. “It’s really good.”

“Figured you’d be hungry.” He handed her a bottle of water.

“We did burn off some calories. Look at you, so thoughtful and caring.”

He grunted, and stuffed some food in his mouth. “We needed to eat.”

When Hayden sat up, he couldn’t not look at her breasts. Breasts he’d spent a long time worshiping.

“You know, after spending some time together—” she broke off another piece of bread “—I think under the gruff, grumpy personality, you’re hiding a good guy.”

“You’re delusional.”

“The grump is just a front.”

“Nope. I’ve always been like this.”

“Really? I bet you drove your mom and dad crazy.”

He stilled. “There was no dad. He left when I was young. When my sister was just a baby.”

Crap. The words just blurted out. He never talked about his family.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

He shrugged a shoulder.

“So, it was just you, your mom, and Jenny?” Hayden said. “I always wanted a sister.”

He felt like claws were sinking into his gut. “We moved in with my grandfather.” Shep paused. “He wasn’t a nice guy.
