After swallowing the lump in my throat, I strode toward it, my footsteps as heavy as my heart. I stared at her name for what felt like ages before sinking to my knees, the cloak billowing around me as I fell. Tears streamed down my cheeks as grief overwhelmed me, as did memories; the countless hours she spent teaching me how to safely and responsibly wield my magic, the innumerable nights I crawled into her bed following a nightmare, all those times we were mistaken for sisters once I reached adulthood. Anger soon followed, intermixing with the sadness that had eaten away at me ever since I’d been given the news of her passing. She was my everything, had been stolen from me far too soon, and it wasn’t fucking fair.

In response to my volatile emotions, flames flickered along my palms, mirroring the way Maman’s magic used to behave on a damn near daily basis. Despite myself, I barked out a laugh; we were so alike it bordered on terrifying. She’d spent her life working to undo the injustices perpetrated by the Church, but the only place it had ever gotten her was an early grave… and now here I was, about to follow in her footsteps.

My entire body quivered as I leaned over her marker, tears falling rhythmically onto the stone. She was my last and only hope. If Maman didn’t have a solution, no one would, and I wasn’t certain which scared me more: her silence or the loneliness. Though I’d always been independent, I’d never faced a scenario like this, one where asking for help could very well damn those I loved straight to Hell.

“What do I do, Maman?” I whispered through the tears. “How do I fix this?”

She never answered.
