Chapter 6

As it turned out, Koharu didn’t need to go looking for Ren. When she stepped outside, the artificial rain had begun like clockwork, falling in cold slants to the pavement, where it gathered in puddles, reflecting the pink and purple haze of neon signs. Ren was standing across the street from Suko’s Paradise, in the shadows, her hands in her pockets. Koharu recognized her by the glowing lights on her leather jacket. The jacket was almost identical to Koharu’s, for everyone in Shira had worn one. Koharu was wearing hers as she stood beneath the awning outside Suko’s, her hands in the pockets.

Ren gave a beckoning gesture, and Koharu waved back, then waded through the sea of hover cars that kept landing and taking off in the street. The second she had drawn near, Ren grabbed her by the arm and roughly hauled her down the alley.

“Hey!” Koharu complained, twisting to get free. “What gives?” She tried again to snatch herself free as they rounded the alley corner, but Ren had always been the stronger cyborg, given that her upgrades were better – a fact which Koharu had always deeply resented.

They came to a dumpster, on which a black cat was sitting before it screeched and ran away at the sight of their struggle. Next to the dingy green dumpster was a single door framed by a dirty brick wall. Ren finally released her hold, and Koharu bitterly snatched her arm away, adjusting her jacket as she sullenly eyed her old friend.

Now that they were under the dim blue light that shed over the door, Koharu could see Ren clearly. She looked the same as she had during their last meeting one year before: the same serious, slanted blue eyes, the same half-shaven long black hair, the same headset with the small mic at her mouth. Both of her forearms were cased in metal to protect her implants, and Koharu knew the same cybernetic upgrades were on her legs as well.

Turning away, Ren pushed the visor down on her headset, scanned the panel on the wall, and started hacking into the door, occasionally passing Koharu dirty looks and shaking her head.

“Ren, have you lost it?” Koharu demanded. “I need to talk to you. Let’s go get a drink and—”

“Shut up, Koharu!” Ren hissed. “Not until we’re inside! This place is abandoned. No cameras in here, I’ve checked.”

Having been successfully hacked, the door scrolled up and away, and together, they stepped into the abandoned building. The door scrolled down behind them, closing them in. The room was so dark, Koharu could hardly see and tried to stay close to Ren, following the lights of her leather jacket. Ren was moving around, and eventually, a light snapped on. It was the flashlight on her headset. The beam was gentle, not blinding, and by its pinkish glow, Koharu could see Ren’s angry face.

“You idiot,” Ren said without preamble. Her hands were in the pockets of her jacket, but she looked tense.

“I didn’t come here to argue some more about Hatsuko,” said Koharu irritably.
