Through a rigorous process called “canonization,” the Church scrutinizes the lives of holy women and men to ensure that they have lived faithful Christian lives and are now united with God in heaven. In Christ they are still connected to us in what the Apostles’ Creed calls the “Communion of Saints.”

Since the saints are in heaven and have direct, face-to-face access to God, we ask them to intercede with the Lord for our needs and intentions. Praying to Mary and the saints is like inviting your earthly mother and father, relatives, and friends to join you in asking God for something. However, with Mary and the saints we can expect better results. They can pray more effectively than our earthly intercessors because of their closeness to God in heaven. “Don’t weep, for I shall be more useful to you after my death,” said St. Dominic to his colleagues, “and I shall help you then more effectively than during my life.” What could he have meant, except that once in heaven he would take their concerns directly to the Lord? And St. Thérèse of Lisieux died in obscurity, but after her death she became one of the most popular modern saints, because thousands of miracles are believed to have occurred through her intercession.
