STRESS AND BLOOD SUGAR
From weight gain to cardiovascular illness, stress seems to be front and center of any number of chronic diseases. Now it seems that people under high stress have something else to worry about: high blood sugar levels.
Think about what happens to your body during times of stress. Your breath becomes shallow, your pulse quickens, and your stomach hurts. Stress also triggers the release of glucoseâsugarâfrom the liver, a way of preparing the body to take actionâthe infamous âfight or flight response.â
But this response to stress was meant to be short term. How often do you find yourself in fight or flight situations? When was the last time you had to run from a rabid dog? A lousy job, a troubled marriage, health concerns, financial strugglesâchronic stress is the stress that vexes us most. Problem is that our body doesnât distinguish between the two. The âfight or flightâ response occurs with both. Any ongoing anxiety can trigger a stress response. Chronic stress is not healthy, but itâs especially awful for anyone with high blood sugar because additional glucose is being continually released into your bloodstream. This glucose is in addition to what we take in from food.
The good news: Simple relaxation exercises and other stress management techniques, such as my BREATHE TECHNIQUE⢠can help you gain more control over blood sugar levels. A study at Duke University found that people with high blood sugar levels who took five diabetes-education classes with stress-management training improved their blood sugar levels enough to lower their risk of the most serious complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision problems.5
