Clarissa was crouched against the wall, huddled into as small of a ball as she could manage. Her body shook uncontrollably and her teeth chattered.
There was a person standing on the other side of the room watching her. The sound of piano strings being stroked started to play in her mind and she squeezed herself even tighter.
She only caught a fleeting glimpse of the dark, shadowy figure with the glowing red eyes before she covered her face with her hands and screamed.
âKeep away from me!â she shrieked.
The cacophony subsided, though she kept her eyes closed.
She didnât want to look.
Was the figure still there?
She couldnât look. If she looked, the figure might still be there, or worseâit might rush at her. Whatever it was, it was tall and gave off a malevolent feeling that soaked down to Clarissaâs core.
âClarissa?â came Harrisonâs voice from behind the door. âHoney, get away from the door. Okay? Can you hear me?â
Her voice was caught in her throat. It felt so dry, like sandpaper. She could barely make a sound.
âY-yes!â she finally cried out. âHurry! Please, hurry!â
âIâm going to kick it down. Make sure youâre far away from the door, okay?â
Clarissa trembled again and whimpered. She was as far away from the door as she could manageâbut the dark figure was standing just to the left of the door. When it was kicked in, the door would swing around and strike whoever was standing over there.
âIâm ready!â she called out, though her voice sounded squeezed. âPlease! Hurry!â
There was a long, excruciating pause, and then the door shook with a boom.
Dust wafted into the air and Clarissa gagged on it.
Again, another thundering boom. The red eyes on the figure flashed like pulsating electrical lights.
Then, at last, on the third try the door came flying open.
Sladen rushed into the room before anyone else.
âMom! Mommy!â he cried out, wrapping his arms around her. âAre you alright?â
The affection was welcome, but Clarissa was still focused on the figure in the room. The door had swung open, so whoever the figure was, they were hidden from sight.
âWatch out!â she warned. âHeâs over there! The man!â
Harrison stepped into the room, surveying the bare walls with a confused expression.
âWho?â he replied. âWhat are you talking about?â
Clarissa pointed a shaky finger at the doorway.
âThe shadowy man,â she said. âHeâs hiding behind the door. He had red, glowing eyes!â
Jett came into the room last waving a hand in front of his face to ward off the floating clouds of dust.
Harrison reached out a hand and guided Jett out of the way, stepping between his family and the doorway.
The room went silent as everyone watched Harrison creep towards the door. It was open so wide that the entire corner of the room was cut off from view.
Slowly, carefully, he reached out a hand to the doorknob. Clarissaâs heart leaped into her throat.
Then, like a cat snatching a mouse, Harrison grabbed the doorknob and yanked the door back on its hinges with a rusty screech.
Clarissa cried out, covering her eyes once more.
