Chapter Seventeen

They pushed off from the top of the slide and began to glide down. The ride was like descending on a smooth ribbon of ebony that went up and down and around curves.

“Aiiiieeee,” screamed Emma.

“Yahoooo,” shouted Ollie.

They were going faster and faster, when with a whoosh they shot off the end and landed in a huge pile of hay. Spluttering, they sat up and blinked their eyes to get used to the light.

Emma started to giggle at the sight of Ollie. He was covered in straw, with bits and pieces sticking out of his hair.

“What’s so funny?” he demanded, brushing himself off.

“You,” said Emma. Then, she burst out laughing and holding her stomach, she fell back onto the hay. Tears started to stream down her face.

“You should see yourself,” she laughed. “Oh, Ollie, you look like the straw man from the Wizard of Oz. It’s so funny.”

Ollie started to grin.

“You don’t look any better yourself, Miss Scarecrow. That was fun!”

“I wish we could do it again,” said Emma.

Ollie started to laugh as well.

“Me too,” he said.

He picked up a handful of straw and threw it at Emma. Soon the two of them were laughing and throwing straw at each other. Gradually, they stopped laughing. Emma began to sob.

“Oh Ollie. I’m worried about Ramses. It isn’t right. It’s my fault he got hurt. I’ve made such a mess of things. I left you when I should’ve stayed; I stayed and tried to help with the fighting when I should’ve gone. I just made all the wrong decisions. What if Ramses dies?”

Ollie put his arms around Emma and held her while she finished crying.

“I know Emma, I know. I’m worried about him too. I was the one who picked him as my Guardian. If I hadn’t, he wouldn’t have been hurt today. We have to keep going and finish this quest. That’s the least we can do for him. Let’s just keep going.

They looked around. The straw was in a large room. It appeared to be a storeroom of some sort.

I wonder if Mr. Badgeria knows we’re here and if we’re safe from Anu and the gang.
