Long-term focus is the ultimate foundation of habit formation. We all go through short-term pain to reach our long-term goal. The key is to create your long-term goal with a focus on incremental growth toward that goal. Remember the importance of incremental progress as you go about your daily activities. My daily routine includes reading, fitness, and educating myself. I know that doing just a little of all three every day makes me better in the long term. Sure, you might suffer short-term slips and failures, but those are just small setbacks to your long-term success. Strong, consistent habits will enable you to put money in the bank every single day with respect to your personal growth. That “money” compounds over time, and your everyday short-term growth will add up until you reach your long-term goal. Longterm thinking also allows for self-innovation. When you’re making changes in your life routines and growth patterns, you’re inevitably going to have failures. If you have a longterm goal, then short-term failures won’t discourage you, and you’ll be able to use the failures as a springboard to innovate into a better version of yourself.

Add the right accountability partners to your circle. To create good habits and routines, you might need some help. For me, it’s not always easy to do well in my health aspirations. For example, I want to eat right every day, but I am always tempted by sweets, sugar, and other junk food. So I hired a nutritionist who makes me check in once a week with my weight goal and eating routine. I even send him photos of myself. Every Friday, one way or the other, I have to show up and tell him what I did. It keeps me accountable, and so I don’t stray too far from my diet and gain weight. Whatever your goal is, you can find a way to keep yourself accountable through other people. The examples span the range of potential human endeavors: a gym partner to motivate you to work out, a book club to force you to read, or a networking group that meets once a week to discuss how to earn more money. Find people who will keep you accountable to your longterm goals, which could be better finances, better health, or a better social life. It can help to find people who have the same goals as you so that you help each other in a mutually beneficial relationship.

It’s not about whatever everybody else is doing. In a world of social media and constant comparisons, we look at our peers and judge them over how well or badly they’re doing. The simple truth is that you just need to concentrate on how you’re doing. I can compare this to an idea of Amazon’s. One of the company’s core principles is to focus on their customers and not on their competition. The company has been successful year after year because they focus on improving their own processes and satisfying their customers rather than on what their competition is doing.
