Chapter 8

Never in his life had Daris owned more than a couple sets of clothing. He owned one set for work in the bakery, which was nothing more than a pair of breeches, a tunic and his apron; and he wore another outfit for everyday life, which was a simple tunic and short breeches, with fewer stains and fewer wrinkles. Besides a heavy cloak and long trousers for the winter, he didn’t have much else.

On this day, however, he found himself garbed in a blue, silk vest over a long, emerald green shirt, with loose sleeves that were tight at the wrists, and matching pantaloons that tucked into his new shoes. The blue vest had golden lace that kept it closed and matched the creases of the soft, green shirt that also featured golden embroidery to accentuate the rich emerald color. A golden sash was also tied tightly around his waist. Over this rich display of color, he donned a fur cloak, made from the hide of the red fox—which was elegant and quite soft to the touch, and he clasped it around his neck with a golden brooch.

He felt important.

Along the wide, brick-laid streets, he rode with feigned confidence upon a black and white dappled palfrey with a smooth gait. It had taken him more than a day to get used to riding the mare, and his backside was quite sore. But the practice paid off at that moment. He noticed, to his great pleasure, that everyone moved out of his way as he passed by, whispering to one another regarding the identity of the young noble. It was amazing how a clean shave and new clothes could so transform a poor baker’s son that people he’d grown up around second-guessed his identity.

The euphoria of it all was intoxicating. Between the comfort and style of the rich clothing and the awe he inspired in the masses as he sat atop his mount, he appeared as a new man, and he could see why nobles flaunted their lot over the public. It even made him forget, however briefly, about the passing of Sir Jesper. The gem lightly pulsed in his chest, seeming to encourage his levity.

The best part was that this was not a dream. True, the means by which he came across the wealth was unsavory, but it was in recent days that he did what he could to justify himself from the criminality of it all. There were two reports that had come to greet Tarakan in the last several days, the first of which was the announcement that the deadly scorpion had been cornered and crushed to death, before which there had been several more deaths. It was dreadful news that there had been more victims, yet the string of deaths related to the scorpion was now over. Daris, for his part, felt relieved and even managed to allow joy into his heart because one curse was now broken.
