Most Good Enough Catholics do not seek to undermine church authority on the issue of sexual behavior. (More on the Good Enough Catholic and church teachings in chapter 12.) Yet today’s realities, and the experiences of our own lives, demand to be recognized and given credence. These, too, have to be part of our moral decision-making on issues of sexual behavior. And these real-life experiences, by the very nature of the corporate body that is the Catholic Church, are part of the body of truth that comprises authoritative Catholic teaching.

For the church’s mandates on sex—while potentially saintly—are not only impossible for most of us to follow, they can be downright counterproductive and dehumanizing. We might be able to patiently wait for a new Catholic theology of marriage or the priesthood, but sex is too much a part of every person’s life merely to look forward hopefully for changes that will surely come in the years ahead. The Good Enough Catholic, while honoring the church’s unflinching disavowal of promiscuity and adultery, seeks in good conscience to make informed, prayerful, moral decisions about their sex lives now. After all, life is more than biology, and sex more than preservation of the species. We have come to understand that there is more involved than a lottery, capriciously matching up egg and sperm regardless of the ability or readiness of the individuals to welcome a new life into their world nine months later.

So let us consider this mysterious, powerful force, both for the married and the unmarried as well.
