MASTER LOPERIAN

Nate’s lungs burned. Exhaustion clouded his throbbing head. Every part of his body ached. He tried to stand, but his body refused to move. I’ll rest for a few minutes. He lay on his side and closed his eyes. Images of the beast attack flooded his mind. He saw Blinkly’s body slumped against the tree. His tear-stung eyes flew open.

Pushing himself to his feet, he started walking. He had to avoid the memories. At a fork in the muddy road, Taycod Highway continued straight, disappearing into a forest. Nate turned onto a narrow side path and plodded through a meadow of yellowing grass toward the blue building shimmering in the distance.

Wavy images appeared on the horizon. Four furry, elf-like creatures approached on snow cougars. From their leather armor and spears, Nate figured they were soldiers or guards from a nearby kingdom. They stopped in front of him, but he kept walking.

The lead gremlin pointed his spear at Nate’s chest and seemed to make a demand. Nate only heard high-pitched squeaking.

Nate shook his head. “I don’t understand.”

The leader barked something at the other three gremlins.

They nudged their cougars and surrounded Nate.

The leader gestured for Nate to climb on the back of one of the huge cats.

Too tired to feel scared or anything else, Nate mounted numbly, and the cougars bounded away. Flopping from side to side, he gripped the saddle. The meadow on both sides of them passed in a blur.

The Halls of Magic grew and soon loomed over them. Constructed entirely of dark-blue crystal, the Halls consisted of a dozen smaller six-sided towers connected by enclosed corridors to a massive building of the same shape. Waterfalls arching from the top of each tower filled a moat below.

The gremlins halted their cougars at a simple wooden hut on the bank of the moat. Their leader dismounted, pointed his spear from Nate to the hut, and then grunted. Nate slid off. The other gremlins dismounted and stood behind him with their spears readied until Nate stumbled up the steps.

Inside the plain hut, a middle-aged, green-haired female elf sat at a desk. She greeted Nate in a flowing language.

Nate shrugged his shoulders again.

Nodding with a smile, she pulled something from the top drawer. She walked over to him and slipped a ring onto his finger.

“Is that better?” she asked with the same kind smile.

Nate looked at her in surprise. He could sense she spoke a different language, but he could understand her.

“Yes!” He pressed his thumb against the pink gem embedded in the ring, making it twist on his finger. “How is this possible?”

“This is an idiom talisman.” She lifted his hand with the ring. “There are many languages spoken at the Halls. Master Loperian created the talisman so you can communicate in all languages when you’re wearing it.”

The gremlin leader pointed his spear at Nate once again. “What is your name?”

Nate marveled that he could now understand the gruff yet high-pitched voice. “I’m Nathanial McGray.”

The gremlin didn’t relax his stance. “Show me your identification parchment.
