Chapter Twenty Seven: Dragons

Sire Vrokk sat in a red velvet-lined chair in his study, which was a large, gray circular stone room at the top of the highest tower of Loach castle. Across from him there was a large mirror, in which Vrokk saw not his own reflection, but an image of the Kindahl. The Kindahl was leaning forward and holding a burning stick of incense, and his face was contorted into a grimace of rage. Vrokk, on the other hand, seemed relaxed, and he leaned back in his chair, his hands folded in front of him.

“I can’t believe that you let them escape!” the Kindahl shouted, waving his incense through the air angrily, leaving a strand of smoke cutting across the air in front of him. “What incompetence! What stupidity! Magician-King Vrokk, I trust you and I value you, I consider you to be my top man. And this is the result that you deliver to me? Prinkepstella was within my grasp and it slipped through your fingers! I should have you killed!”

“Your anger is justified, your Majesty,” Vrokk said in a calm, soothing tone of voice. “However, now is not the time to be hasty and to overreact. We may have lost the battle, but the war is far from over. And besides, one of the Arlians is now dead.”

“A pathetic result, in my opinion,” the Kindahl countered. “Vrokk, you have severely displeased me. To atone for this, you will have to suck even more energy out of the land and peoples of Loach, and deliver this energy to me. In addition, your orders remain the same. Find the golden wand, and give it to me.”

“Your wish shall be done,” Vrokk said. “In fact, I have a plan for how the wand shall be retrieved. Somehow, the enemy managed to do battle with a dragon and survive, so their might is great and must not be underestimated. Yet, there are resources which we can draw upon in order to eliminate them. Have you considered the possibility of summoning a demon? I believe that the best way to defeat the Arlians is to raise a demon and unleash it upon them. I will summon a demon and bind it into a blood pact. Then I will order it to find and kill the Arlians, retrieve the wand and bring it back to me. Then I will give the golden wand to you, and you will locate and sit upon Vladius’s Throne of Darkness. Then you will rule the world as Vladius’s Avatar.”

“Summon a demon? I agree! That is a grand idea!” The Kindahl leaned back, the look of rage on his face replaced by a soft smile.

“As you know, Sire Vrokk, during the First Age, before the arrival of Vladius and Arlius, there was a war between the original kingdom of humans, called Zega, and the race of demons, who formed an army and tried to exterminate the human race. The demons were once many and powerful, and they mated with the animals of the Living World, producing the devil-animals.
