Her husband cast aside his book and rose to his feet the very moment she entered the library that night, anxiety written all over his face. If Elizabeth had not just seen him looking hale and hearty at dinner a mere hour ago, she might have mistaken him for having been ill.

"Are they taking well to Mrs. Bailey?" He asked cautiously about their new wet nurse. "I—I suppose it's not entirely expected for a man to express interest in such things. Forgive me if I⁠—"

"They are well." Elizabeth eased him with both her words and a hand to his forearm. Mr. Darcy released a breath he must have been holding, and she bid him to sit with her with a smile. "The twins have always taken well to their wet nurses, even those who have assisted us for very brief durations. Mrs. Bailey appears to know well how to interact with babes and exhibits gentleness towards them."

"I am glad." Mr. Darcy sighed again.

He had shed his dinner coat since their parting, and he looked far more comfortably dressed than Elizabeth had ever seen him before. His cravat, as always, nestled perfectly against his neck; and Elizabeth nearly wished to give it a small tug, if only just to see if it was indeed made of cloth.

"She is the wife of a long-standing tenant, you must know. I would never have agreed to employing her if we had known her any less."

Elizabeth's wandering mind was caught by surprise at her husband's continuing speech, and she shifted herself to sit more properly as if her posture could tame her thoughts as well. "I have no doubt you must have recommended only the best."

"Mr. and Mrs. Bailey have four older children. It is only their recent, unexpected youngest child that they have lost. It is my hope that her experience with her own sons and daughters may aid in her new role."

"It seems to be helping already," Elizabeth assured. It was strange to see Mr. Darcy unsure of anything, but there was a certain joy in being the person tasked to encourage him. "And I hope as well that the twins may bring her some solace in the midst of her grief."

"They are very dear children and would most certainly do so."

Elizabeth smiled at the easy confidence her husband had in the winsomeness of Bennie and Bea. She would never argue with him over that.

"I hope you did not find it very tiresome waiting in the library." Elizabeth glanced at the wonderful collection surrounding them. Her first glimpse of the expansive Pemberley collection had inspired awe in her at first, and pride now that she had come to see it as her own. Was it any wonder that Mr. Darcy, who had grown up in possession of such a truly fine home, once found her corner of Hertfordshire uncommonly countrified? “Although I am glad that we decided to adjourn here in the days we do not have company."

"Rather little to do in the drawing room, I admit.
