Accept a stalemate if you must
The other person may not come around, and unless they are your child or work for you directly, they probably donât have to.
âPerhaps one of the most important pieces of respectfully disagreeing with someone is knowing when you need to just call it quits and move on,â says Boogaard. âNo, itâs not always easy to swallow your pride and walk awayâparticularly when you feel strongly about your side. But sometimes itâs the best thing you can do.â Try not to hold the difference of opinion against the other person and instead focus on the aspects of your life or work you can control.
I have known Cate Luzio for a few years now. We met when her publicist reached out to SWAAY about a feature story on her newly launched venture, Luminary. Cateâs company is a collaboration hub for women to grow professionally and expand their networks. I was thrilled not only to get a hard-hat tour of her space in Manhattan but also become a member when Luminary officially opened its doors in late 2018. A former banker turned entrepreneur, Cate has been in a lot of situations where sheâs had to confront those with different perspectives. âEven if you know you donât agree, be transparent,â she advises. âAnd sooner rather than later. Donât let it fester, because there will be long-term pain for you, the other party, and those around you. Communicate openly, and think through the other personâs point of view before you respond. It may not always work out the way you want, but nine times out of ten there will be a resolution.â
Even if there isnât, being proactive will improve your outlook. And approaching a conflict or a disagreement isnât always about winning. âI recall asking a former boss for a raise and being told no,â Cate shares. âI went back to him after that conversation, summarized what Iâd heard, and laid out a plan for getting the extra money. Ultimately, he still didnât agree, but at least I articulated my points well.â
Now thatâs a boss move!
