Candle for Your Thoughts

Mrs. Smith’s fifth-grade class had made milk-carton wax candles to give as holiday gifts. Unfortunately, some of them looked like someone had dropped them. One of my classmates, who’d spent very little time on the project, ended up with the best-looking candle, while another, who had worked the hardest, had hers turn to mush.

Mrs. Smith called me into the supply room. “Danny’s candle is so much prettier than Kathy’s— I fear Kathy will be heartbroken,” she said. Together we decided to have the class draw straws for the candles.

I was only ten, but Mrs. Smith had chosen me as her confidante and asked for my advice. It was the first time an adult had treated me as an equal. But guess who got a smushed candle?
