In the hay bin, Marilla Marzy sat cross-legged, upright like an Indian yogi who was meditating. She appeared to be in a trance, eating one Oreo cookie after the other. Seemingly unconscious movements, one hand repeatedly stuffed a cookie into her mouth. Her other hand repeatedly twirled the same long strand of dark hair. Her eyes appeared transfixed. Both the green eye and the brown one stood perfectly still as if they were locked in place. She stared ahead into the distance as if she saw a far off land—her own Nirvana:

… a land where she was thin.

…a land where potato chips were an important food group.

…a land where she could eat mounds of chocolate, cartons of ice cream, warm donuts by the dozens, and stacks of pasta with buttered garlic bread and never gain a pound.

…a land where she was born with eyes the same color. And if, by chance, she happened to be born with unmatched eyes, in that land she had a father who would allow her to wear colored contacts so that her eyes appeared normal to everyone else.

… a land where she was brilliant like Einstein and wildly creative like Salvador Dali.

…a land where her breasts were larger than her stomach.

…a land where people thought she was an angel instead of a witch.

…a land where she laughed in her sleep instead of screamed.

…a land where she had a beautiful name—a Goddess sounding name that didn’t rhyme with gorilla.

…a land where she was loved and wanted by both parents.

…a land where she was not a mistake.
