There’s a tall stool in this magical kitchen—as tall as the old lady herself—but she manages to climb it and perch there. From its top, she directs me around the kitchen. I go from the magical fridge to the magical stove, and from the magical cutting board to the magical sink. Soon I’ve chopped onions and carrots and potatoes and rutabagas and celery root and so many herbs that I lose count.

“All of it, into the pot,” she instructs, always smiling, always pleasant, and I obey.

Before long, the biggest shining pot in the kitchen is full almost to the rim, bubbling and steaming, filling the cavernous apartment with the most amazing smells.
