Henry and Mary Lambert

The spirit of Henry Lambert’s wife, Mary, is believed to linger at the St. James. Even though she died in 1926, some believe she is still here looking after guests. She is not seen but her presence has been felt often by guests, staff, and psychics. Her perfume has been smelled many times by many people. If you sleep in her old bedroom (Room 17), you may awaken to hear tapping on the window. Guests, who have left the window up to enjoy the night breeze, had heard persistent tapping until they finally close the window. According to one investigation, two little girls who died of diphtheria and a “dwarf-sized man named “Little Imp” who steals and moves objects just to be mischievous also haunt the property.

The thing that makes St. James Hotel one of the most haunted hotels in America is that the paranormal activity is “off the charts.” Guests and staff have experienced nearly all possible paranormal activity: cold spots, unexplainable electronic malfunctions, moving/falling objects, the smell of perfume and pipe smoke, footsteps, piano music is heard coming from the antique piano that hasn’t been played—by humans— in years (witnesses say it sounds like old dance hall/saloon music), and the chandelier on the second floor landing turning on by itself (electricians can find no logical reason for this). The spookiest thing is the cowboy spirit. There is a mirrored bar that is original to the saloon. Patrons sometimes see the reflection of a cowboy in this mirrored surface, but when they turn around, no one is there.

While most activity occurs in the main hotel, some ghostly activity has been reported in its ten-room annex.
