Once the knights were backstage, I walked over to the racks, admiring the medieval rags for the leads. Beside the racks, a table stood with newsletters piled on top. I quickly grabbed one and scanned the page. It was regarding the play, Medieval Nights. It was a permission slip with few other minor details for other members of the play. They were told to wear a plain t-shirt. That definitely paled in comparison to the radiant metal knight suit that I hoped to be wearing in the play. After reading the script about a gazillion times, the role of the Lead Knight never failed to intrigue me.
I stepped back to the rack and took a hold of one of the smaller suits. They werenât full metal, only the shoulder pads and such. The rest was some gray patchwork to cover the arms and legs. A matching plastic sword hung on the belt of each one.
âLetâs begin with Jake Macdonald,â Adam Collins called from the stage door. He twisted his face across the room, noticing the amount of people who would audition. He looked so young with his blue eyes and golden hair. I couldnât believe he was already working at a school.
He stepped into the backstage area and began walking straight toward me. âArica Miller?â he asked.
âYes?â I gulped.
âAre you trying out for the Lead Knight?â He pointed to my name on his clipboard.
âYes,â I repeated.
âGood luck,â he said happily. âYouâre next.â
I thanked him and then he left for the auditorium with Jake. I repeated his words through my head. I knew he meant that I was going after Jake, but there was something weird about how he said youâre next.
When Jake had finished with his audition, he didnât come backstage. Instead, he sat shaken in the back of the auditorium. I wasnât sure if he was just nervous, or scared of some other crazy theory.
A boy walked through the stage door. It was Rowen. He sat beside me and said a friendly hello.
âYouâre trying out?â I questioned.
âIâm only here to wish you good luck. And because this is my shift.â He chuckled.
âThanks,â I said both meaningfully and sarcastically. I waited until I heard a lady call my name, and then I walked to the stage.
