3.2.5 Programming Fluid

Geeks like sodas. Soda is an effervescent friend who delivers both sugar and caffeine. Despite advertising that associates soft drinks with tanned, athletic, outdoorsy consumers, geeks feel strongly that a canned beverage consisting mainly of chemicals is their drink of destiny. (Clearly the soft drink industry hasn’t yet discovered geeksploitation; see section 4.3.3.) Soda consumption is a competitive activity, and every machine room has a “champ” whose pile of cans looms over all the others.

Soda may be the most difficult junk food from which to wean your geek. J.C.R. Licklider, the influential author of Man-Computer Symbiosis and an internet pioneer, is said to have begun every day with a cola. Try providing your geek with some URLs which discuss the hazards of high soda intake and see if he cuts down on his own. If he doesn’t, encourage seltzer as a substitute (still fizzy; no chemicals, sugar, or caffeine). As a desperate strategy, spilling a soda on a beloved machine can get them banned from the tech room. Proceed with caution.
