A cloud of dust rose up in spirals as I landed in a heap on the aged living room floor.

I was soaked to the skin. Bits of mud and who knows what else from the swamp clung to my matted black hair.

I must look like a wild beast. Or a girl who has just taken a bath in the foulest water imaginable.

I reached into the deep pocket of my hoodie and pulled out a number of hairpins, fastening my wild hair out of my face. Thankfully, they didn’t fall out in the swamp.

“Ewww, suppose I won’t be getting to wash this off anytime soon,” I said wryly, picking a rotted leaf from behind my ear. “It's freezing in here!” Goosebumps had sprouted up all over my body.

Wearing damp clothes in the hot jungle is irritating and uncomfortable, but wearing damp clothes on a cold October’s evening in a large house with no apparent heating system is a sure way to develop pneumonia.

“Genius! Pure genius!” Noah muttered. He was bent low over the wooden table, studying the board with renewed interest.

Once again, he showed no after-effects from a life and death situation.

Walter crawled over to join him. “Discover something new, Mr. Edison? Or would you prefer, Mr. Graham Bell?”

Noah ignored Walter’s wisecrack on famous inventors and turned to me instead. “Izzy, this all makes sense now. Well, a meaningful element of it anyway.”

“I’m all ears, Noah,” I said, tilting my head to the side, trying to dislodge trapped swamp water from my left ear. “Well, one ear for now.”

“Do you remember our fifth birthday party?”

“Let me see...there was cake, and a magic show, and presents, and we sang happy birthday...no, Noah! I don’t remember back that far!”

“I’ll be more specific. Do you remember the gift we got from batty old Aunt Hilary?”

I chose not to answer Noah. Instead, I folded my arms and gave him a look he knew all too well.

“Aunt Hilary brought us a game,” Noah wisely continued. “A popular tabletop game for kids. We played with it all evening. Come to think of it, that game was the last time you bested me at family game night…”

I frowned dangerously at Noah.

“Anyway, do you want to hear the most intriguing part? That particular game involved hippos...hungry hippos to be precise!”

I think I could vaguely recall a game of the sort as described by Noah. But our fifth birthday was a long time ago. And I couldn’t see why this memory was so relevant, other than the fact that the game had hippos and we just had our own fearsome experience with the same animal.

“Don’t you see?” Noah exclaimed, looking from Walter’s blank face to my own.

“The tasks in The Game With No Name are based on real-life family board games! Well, not exactly based on them but certainly loosely!”

“The Game With No Name?” I asked, my eyebrows rising.

“I named it that,” he said proudly. “We have to call it something, right?”

“So, let me get this straight,” Walter said, shaking his head dismissively.
