Underminers of their own wellbeing because of practicing high-risk, self-initiated initiation processes: car speeding, drug taking, sexual violence, train surfing, and the like.

In effect, uninitiated males often remain functional boys living in men’s bodies, continuing to do in adulthood what boys have always done. Of course uninitiated females and non-binary people can, if they put their minds to it, do just as much damage to themselves and others as uninitiated males, which is why they too need initiations specifically designed for them.

In Modernist times, traditional adolescent initiation was treated with disrespect and jettisoned. Modernists regarded adolescent initiation not as heritage but as baggage. In its rush into modernity, humanity threw out the baby with the bathwater. In Postmodern times, the value of traditional practices has become more appreciated and adolescent initiation is regaining its status as heritage.
