This is a tough situation for introverts, because we often prefer just a few deep relationships to lots of shallow ones. For example, we’ll make a few close friends, and tend to stick with them over the long term. So ‘breaking up’ with a client comes particularly hard for us. And it pays to be prepared.

The first thing to remember is that the client’s decision might be nothing to do with you. For example, it could be because they have fewer resources to spare, or because their business is going in a different direction. Or they might be looking for someone to help them chase some new fad or fashion. That doesn’t mean your service is bad or obsolete – just that it it’s no longer right for this particular client.
