CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
âSam,â Elsa said. âWhat are you doing here?â
Sam said nothing but looked at Aurelia instead.
âTake a seat,â Aurelia said to the younger woman.
Sam shuffled backwards and slid into a chair, her gaze not meeting Elsaâs.
Elsa moved towards the other chair, the more comfortable one immediately opposite Aureliaâs desk.
âNot you,â Aurelia said.
Elsaâs head flicked up, looking at Aurelia. âSorry?â
âYou can remain standing.â
Elsa put a hand on the desk. âIs there a problem?â
âYou could say that.â
Aurelia stood up. She bent down and lifted something from behind her desk. A plastic box. In it were shards of paper, the output of the shredding machine.
Elsa felt her stomach lurch. âI can explain.â
Aurelia raised a finger, shaking her head. âSam has told me everything.â
Elsa glanced at Sam, who was looking down at her lap. Sam was scared for her job. She was desperate, Elsa knew that.
Elsa lifted her chin, looking Aurelia in the eye. âYouâre the one who made me work for him. You know the kind of thing it entails.â
Aurelia gripped the edge of the plastic box. âDestroying evidence is a criminal offence.â
Elsa slammed a hand onto the desk. âCome on, Aurelia, donât be so naive. When you work for men like Arthur Kelvin you know that sometimes you have to cross a line.â
Aurelia leaned forwards. Her gaze flicked to Sam. âNo.â
âDonât tell me Harry never did anything like this.â
âHarry managed to represent that man while keeping everything above board.â
Elsa scoffed. âWell, if you believe thatââ
âIf I believe that, what?â Aurelia interrupted.
âYouâre fucking naive.â
Elsa knew she was burning bridges now.
Aurelia sat down, slamming herself into the chair.
âI expect you out of here by the time everybody else arrives.â
âReally? Iâm a named partner. You canât just kick me out.â
âCheck the partnership agreement. I think youâll find I can. And I think that compared to the alternative, which is informing the Law Society, youâll be quite pleased when I do.â
Elsa forced her muscles to relax. She blinked a few times at Aurelia, then looked at Sam. Samâs legs were crossed beneath her, her eyes almost closed.
âVery well,â said Elsa. âBut whoâs going to represent him now?â
