CHAPTER TWELVE

Using my enhanced hearing has come at a price. I'm hungry and unnerved through lunch, where Riley and I sit together, and I'm also hungry after I finish. Riley seems okay. Now it's my turn to have the problems, and not just the ones centered on the fact that we’ve got to come up with the killer yesterday. I'm going to need to hunt again after this, so I'm glad that we have tons of deer and other wildlife in the woods around Moon's Peak. The town has done lots of logging, yeah, but it's also done a good job replanting the trees and managing their forests and wildlife. I know the Beaumonts, who practically founded this town, had something to do with ensuring a constant food supply.

"Don't let what Cat said get to you," Riley says as we finish eating.

"I can't help it," I say, wanting to spill the horrible thoughts I've had over the past week, that seem to come without me controlling them. Is there a part of me that craves controlling others? That wants to lash out at everyone I love? "Nightsides are dangerous. I know that."

"You don't have to be. It's a choice. You can still prove to the hunters you're on their side. You've attacked no humans. Just animals. Deer and sheep. And that's just nature." He smiles, all confident.

"The hunters are leaning towards war." I slide my remaining peas around on my tray, making a point not to look at Lily and Cat seated on the opposite side of the room, right under the lumberjack mascot paintings.

"Well, we'll get to see Lily at prep," Riley says.

"Prep?" I look at him as he gives me a killer smile.

"For the dance. The Logger's Run festival. All that," he says.

I've almost forgotten with everything else happening. The dance is in just two weeks. "Cat will be with her," I grumble. "So we really won't see her, and Cat won't let Lily talk about us while we're all in that library." I split my hearing again, focusing on Lily. But they've been talking about trigonometry homework for the entire lunch. It’s as if Cat knows Riley and I can listen to them. We got lucky this morning when she didn't see us near the office.

The rest of the afternoon goes by without incident. My hunger grows no more intense than it was at lunch, so I feel like I can get through the Student Committee meeting. We won't have to go back to the mansion yet where Stanley spends the days, and we won't have to deal with him giving us the stink eye and trying to tear us apart. I still don't like him.

I just hope Dad realizes he could be a problem, even if he isn't the killer.

And I wish I could talk to Dad about these invasive thoughts. That wasn't dinner conversation.

Once the last bell rings, Riley and I head to the school library, where a few other students are already gathering. Lily and Cat, I see, have already taken a table near the back of the room.
