Frost lifted me into his lap as if I weighed no more than a feather.

“Better?” He asked and pressed his forehead against mine.

“Perfect,” I whispered back to him.

“It’s always like this with new mates. To be honest, I always thought people were crazy. Now not touching you hurts.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I should’ve--- I shouldn’t have taken so long to feel---”

He pressed a gentle finger against my lips.

“Don’t apologize for needing time to feel better after what you’ve been through. Not to me or anyone else. That night was fucked up and I didn’t know any of them. My ego isn’t so fragile that I couldn’t see how much you hurt – how much you’re still hurting. I want to wipe the slate clean and give you a life where those times are a million miles away as the dragon flies, but I know better. Time will help, but some things we never forget. I’ll be here tonight, tomorrow, forever.”

I rested my forehead against his shoulder and found something squishy.

Squinting through the dark I couldn’t tell what it was.

“Did you get hurt?” I asked.

“No, why?”

“I think you have something swelling up on your shoulder.”

“That’s my claiming gland,” he laughed and rubbed a hand over it. “It’s all full, because we met, silly.”

I touched my own shoulders looking for this magical thing he had, and I knew I didn’t.

“Not like we wouldn’t have noticed a giant squishy ball on our shoulder,” my wolf shook his head as I patted myself down.

“I don’t think I have one.”

“Everyone has one that’s Alpha or omega.”

“Then maybe they diagnosed me wrong,” I laughed.

“May I look, mate?”

“At my shoulders?” I blushed, feeling like a fool. At one time or another all the guys walked around shirtless and some of the girls too.

Modesty wasn’t what wolf shifters were famous for.

“Yeah,” I nodded and bit my lip.

Frost’s fingers ran over my shoulders to either side of my neck. Even through the thin fabric of my shirt, his warmth radiated into my flesh. He moved the cloth to one side and then the other and then looked at me.

“This is impossible,” he said.

“What is?”

“You are an omega. You’re my mate. We’re true-mates. That’s Alpha and omega. It should be there,” he said and slid his fingers across my shoulders again.

“Well, maybe that doesn’t happen on Earthside. I’ve never heard of it before,” I leaned back away from his probing fingers. “Is that a problem?”

“Not for me personally. I’m just wondering how our claiming vows work then,” Frost tilted his head.

“I’ve never heard of those either. Is it like a marriage?” I asked.

“One that was destined before time began on Earthside,” he nodded.

“Okay, I love all the mystic stuff, but let’s stick to modern-day facts.”

“Facts are facts because they don’t change.”

“Touché, but you know what I meant.”

“I do,” he nodded and grinned, “but it’s sexy when you’re all worked up.”

“I should slap you,” I laughed, feeling more amused than my wolf did.

“If that’s your idea of foreplay,” his hands found my ass and squeezed making it hard to think for a second.
