Chapter Twenty-Nine

Seven hours in the confinements of the kitchen had resulted in nine cherry pies. Nine cherry pies had not resulted in my thoughts steering away from the businessman in the other room.

Stressed spelt backwards was desserts.

There was only so much baking I could do. I could not exactly bake it till I make it. The reason for my frenzied thoughts was under the same roof as me.

I began whisking another batch of eggs, flour and sugar and prepared the mixture for my tenth cherry pie.

A small gasp from the kitchen doorway made my movements come to a stop.

Clarice had a small hand covering her mouth as she stared wide-eyed at the kitchen counter. She let out a small giggle when she noticed the pies piling on top of another.

She slid across the floor tiles over to the pies before she pointed with a small finger and began counting them.

I smiled at her encouragingly, knowing that she was trying hard to learn her numbers despite her difficultly in understanding numeracy.

"Nine!" She cheered, obviously proud of herself "There is nine pies!"

I bent down and gave her a kiss on the top of her head before praising "Well done, baby."

"Who is going to eat them all?" Her little voice turned confused as she pouted curiously up at me.

"I'm not sure." I shrugged before asking "You will help me eat them all, won't you?"

"Mommy?" She whispered like she was letting me in on a secret "Are you baking fruit cakes to try and get me to eat healthier again?"

I peered down at the small girl with raven black pigtails and whispered back "Maybe."

Her face lit up with a smile and I smiled right back at her.

The small girl danced on her toes while she moved further into the kitchen. She peered at herself in the reflection of the metallic fridge.

"Will I grow up to be just as pretty as you, Momma?" She sang hopefully, turning her attention away from her reflection to me.

I knew I was not an ugly troll but that did not lessen my shock when people complimented me. I was horrible at receiving compliments. I had lost every ounce of self-esteem when I was in my last relationship, and I had never been able to gain it back.

When someone told you something over and over again, you started to believe it yourself.

Sometimes I only looked into the mirror a few seconds at a time and when I did I went numb. I tried not to think about the person that looked back at me.

I stood still for a few seconds before I shook off the bad memories.

"Even prettier." I assured her, reaching down and pinching her cheeks "Because you are the most beautiful girl on earth."

Clarice grinned before twirling around, her pink puffy skirt twirling as she did so "Also the prettiest on the planet that I rule over?"

I stifled a laugh and nodded "Yes. You are also the most beautiful on your planet too."

All that time with the egotistic Jagger Warren had rubbed off on her.
