CHAPTER NINE

PARKING her car outside the house a couple of hours later, and seeing Nick’s pick-up already parked there, Joey knew she wouldn’t have to wait long to hear exactly what he thought of her and Lily spending most of the evening with David Banning!

And after the traumatic couple of hours she had just spent with the other man she didn’t think she was up to it. That bubble of hope she had so briefly experienced had been rent asunder rather than just burst!

How could she possibly marry David Banning?

Nick, wearing faded blue denims and a navy-blue shirt, got slowly out of the pick-up as Joey and Lily approached the front door of the house, his gaze narrowed censoriously.

‘Nick,’ Joey greeted him lightly as he walked over to join them.

His expression was grim as he nodded to her in greeting before looking down at the sleepy Lily. ‘Hello, pumpkin. New doll?’ he asked interestedly.

He didn’t miss a thing, did he? Joey berated inwardly as she unlocked the door to let them all into the house. A fact she would do well to remember, she was sure…

‘Uncle David gave her to me,’ Lily answered him smilingly.

‘She’s beautiful,’ Nick told her admiringly. ‘Have you had a nice evening?’

‘Yes, thank you,’ Lily had time to answer before giving a huge yawn.

‘Time for bed, young lady,’ Joey cut in firmly, avoiding looking directly at Nick, although she was very aware of the animosity emanating from him. ‘Would you like to make yourself a coffee or something while I take Lily upstairs?’ she suggested hurriedly.

‘Or something,’ he muttered in agreement.

Joey ignored his obviously angry tone, trailing wearily up the stairs after a sleepy Lily, knowing Nick would be out of luck if he expected to find any more wine to drink; the three of them had finished off the bottle last night, and she didn’t have any more in the house. But maybe by the time she came back downstairs Nick would be feeling less annoyed.

Or, conversely, more so…!

For the moment Joey didn’t care, just glad of the respite, and still having trouble believing the last couple of hours she had spent with David Banning. The man had as good as asked her to marry him!

Absolutely incredible!

How on earth had the man gone from arrogant hostility directly to a marriage proposal?

Joey gave a shake of her head as she helped the tired Lily into her nightclothes before tucking her up in bed, her new doll at her side. Of course.

Not that Joey had had the opportunity of giving any sort of answer to David’s incredible suggestion—Lily and the food had arrived at the table before Joey could recover from the shock of what he had just said to her, putting an end to any more private conversation between the two adults.

Which wasn’t to say Joey hadn’t given David Banning a few frowningly thoughtful looks from beneath lowered lashes when she’d known he wasn’t looking at her.

He hadn’t looked as if he’d had some sort of brainstorm since she’d seen him last night.
