The First Move

Isabelle wiped the perspiration form her cheeks with a handkerchief, today was one of the muggiest she could remember. Perhaps once she was somewhere more private she’d cast a fair weather spell. She locked her front door, and headed for her car but could already tell from the front step that something was wrong.

“Damn it!” She howled, discovering four flat tires. She bent, and ran her hand over one of her front tired and felt the vicious tear. No, this was not Jake; he would not begin the battle with such a juvenile deed. She knew for a fact that his attack would come subtly, and magically. This was no magical attack and she knew exactly who was responsible.

She lifted her head, and stared across her driveway into the Manning’s yard. The curtain in the front window had just fallen into place when her gaze had reached it. A snarl curled onto her face as she stood up. Now was no the time for this. She neither had the time or the patience to deal with them right now; she needed to be one hundred percent ready for the impending duel. The slightest distraction could cost her her life; their meddling had to stop. Her thoughts were dark and angry, while she stood there, seething. She spread her fingers across the frame of her car and focused all of her power. A hissing sound erupted as the tires inflated and mended their wounds. Before getting in the car, she glanced down at the sigil tied to her left wrist and smiled.

“It’s final,” Julia said one last time to a reluctant Jake.

There wasn’t much conversation between the two of them this morning, and the mugginess hadn’t made it any easier. They were both feeling understandably irritable. Their only passing words were Jake’s final pleas to not take Krystal to a doctor because he knew that it was a waste of time. He knew that there was nothing wrong with her, just that his daughter was special. He couldn’t quite put his finger on how or what her sleepwalks meant but he was pretty sure she was going to grow up to be just like him. Time would tell.

This morning’s argument was over before it started. Julia had made it plain and clear. “Mirium said that she’ll come by and pick up Krystal and me,” she said. “Everything is being handled. I already called, and talked to Dr. Haven; I told him it was an emergency, and he’s going to see her today.”

“Julia c’mon, an emergency? I hardly think so. Don’t you think—”

“I think it is, Jake. Even if you don’t, I don’t want this continuing.”

“I told you that it can be controlled; it’s perfectly normal. You’re worried over nothing.”

“So you’re a doctor, now?”

“I didn’t say that. I just know it’s not that big a deal.”

“Can’t you see that this scares me?” She shook her head. “I’m not waiting. There’s nothing more to say.”

“Fine.” Jake didn’t like this side of Julia but he understood her concern.
