Chapter Ten

Libby

Libby had plenty to think about. Not only had two companies in New York got back to her regarding the résumés she sent them, but one had links with London and other sites around the UK and they’d made contact to ask her to go for an interview there tomorrow. Ever since Drew had floated the idea of working in one of England’s cities, the thought hadn’t entirely gone from her mind and she’d sent out a few résumés on the off-chance that a position might come up. Tomorrow she hoped her trip to London might well be what clinched it and helped to make up her mind about England versus a return to America.

‘You’re looking lovely today, Libby.’ Sonia behind the counter at the bakery smiled at Libby’s floaty summer frock, cream with tiny flowers in all colours of the rainbow. She’d bought it at the charity shop two doors down, in need of more clothes. She hadn’t realised how much she’d relied on business and formal wear until she’d left the workforce and had to make do with everything else she had. It wasn’t as though there was much left in America either, her wardrobe was strangely bereft of clothes that didn’t warrant a trip to the office.

‘Thank you, that’s kind. Two loaves of the chia wholemeal please, and I’ll take six soft white rolls.’

‘Coming right up.’ Sonia got to it, filling paper bags with everything Libby asked for, ushering the box of tasters her way as usual. This time it was lemon and almond slice Zelda was trying out on customers and the citrus zing had Libby taking a second piece and then buying an entire tray. ‘You got me,’ she called over her shoulder as she left Sonia to serve her next customer. Although when she turned and bumped right into Rick she wished she hadn’t lingered so long choosing what she wanted. Ever since that night in the pub, the way he’d looked at her had given her the creeps and his presence wasn’t doing much else this time.

‘Libby isn’t it?’ The cool green of his eyes were that of someone who couldn’t be trusted, so Lauren had told her on the way home from the pub. She’d cited his behaviour over the local library mainly, something that had upset plenty of people. According to Lauren he was the sort of man to watch out for, someone who was plotting what trouble he could cause next.

‘That’s right,’ she said flatly.

‘How are you settling in to the farm?’ He looked her up and down, one side of his mouth hooked up as though he were a trout on the end of a line. ‘Bit different to living in New York I’ll bet.’

She didn’t appreciate that he knew that little fact about her – or anything about her for that matter. ‘It’s very different, but a good different.’

‘You’re going to run the place are you?’

‘The bakery?’

‘The farm and the house for the homeless.’ His mouth twitched on the final word.
