Chapter 10

Will and Drew, in their excitement about the new land, have ridden their horses’ knees to the ground. Rafe is hysterical as he reaches the boys. Rafe listens as they spill their hearts…they have seen the New Jerusalem. Rafe gathers all the information he can from his scouts and then rushes to inform Norman and the entire wagon train. Rafe is distributing the good news of the promised land, which is within their grasp. Norman has a duty now to appoint a land and planning commission. Really, he would wish that the overseer group would move in that direction. The entire wagon folks must have the voice in all actions taking place! The wagons have circled. They are ready to eat and bed for the night. Sue and Julia are beside the fire with Samuel. Norman and Rafe call a meeting to order! Norman is standing in a chair, bellowing out. He remarks to his friends of the wagon train, “We are here, another step forward in the procurement, distribution, and settling the land in a fair and balanced fashion.” Also announcing, “We must keep our wagon train in effect until land maps are drawn. Parcels must be handled legally and beyond reproach for farms, a site for a town, farms suited for land cultivation, land for cotton, and then cattle in the best interest of everyone.” Still speaking, he asks the group for a ten-man group such as the group overseer board.

I applaud him in his desire to keep this group intact as a Land and Planning Commission remaining active until elected officials can be sworn!” His remarks draw applause from the people.

Then a tobacco-chewing young man draws closer to Norman, remarking, “I want to sponsor a second to the wisdom of the good doctor Jones. My name is Bob Addison. I agree with the work of the overseers!”

Then Rafe comes forward, saying, “We have a motion and a second for the overseer committee to become established as the Land and Planning Commission!” Rafe finishes his remarks. The people have stood in approval before he can announce the situation. Rafe recognizes the affirmative voting and tells Norman, “Sir, you have everyone voting with the doctor!”

The workers are preparing drawing plats, maps, and roads. The wagon train pulls from the town area searching for a homestead. If any disputes come, the board will settle the issues. Folks view the land. They purchase as many acres as their holdings in currency will allow. Rafe is busy following Norman around as potential farm folks trade parcels of land or most anything but their wife to acquire the acreage for their homeplace. Norman and Rafe are set on living close to each other. They really use everything possible to gather land alongside of the small river that flows through the
