âI told him to bloody well talk to someone,â Doc Blaney told Leading Senior Constable Anderson. His face was twisted in despair.
âCall me Barbara,â the police officer said. âYou found him?â
âHe said he was going to come to the Bowlo, and then he never showed. I got worried. His wife left him, you know?â
Barbara nodded, kept her expression as neutral as possible. âI did know that, yes.â
âBlew his bloody brains out, stupid cunt!â Blaney snapped. âWhat a fucken waste, I told him he could talk to us.â He looked up sharply. âSorry, âscuse language. He bloody loved that woman, you know. Always so bloody proud of her. âImagine me,â heâd say, âpunching so far above my weight!â And then she up and leaves him. None of us are perfect, are we? I mean, especially the blokes, right? Weâre fucken useless a lot of the time, but he bloody loved her.â
âDo you need to talk to anyone?â Barbara asked.
âWhat? Nah, Iâm good. Iâm a doctor, Iâve seen plenty of horrible stuff. And Iâve got me mates. Thanks, though.â
âOkay, good. Iâve got your details. I might need to ask a few more details. Thereâs an...â Barbara paused, knowing what small-town gossip was like. Especially Gulp gossip. Regardless of what they were learning, suicide was clear. No one else was anywhere near the place. The locals didnât need to know they suspected guilt rather than grief. âThereâs an ongoing investigation,â she said. âThese things have a lot of due process.â
âCourse, yeah, no worries. Happy to help wherever I can.â
Scrapper sat in the corner, ears flat, eyebrows tight together. He had been trembling the whole time.
âWe need to secure the house for the coroner,â Barbara said. âDo you know anyone who can take care of the dog?â
âMy old bluey died last year,â Doc Blaney said. âBeen putting off getting a new dog.â He crouched down. âYou want to come with me, boy?â Scrapper came forward, head low, tail tucked, and pressed into the Docâs hand.
âIs that okay?â Barbara asked.
âSure. Weâve known each other a long while, eh? Come on, Scraps. We can remember Clem together.â
Barbara watched out of the kitchen window as Doc Blaney got Scrapper to jump up into the back of a battered Mitsubishi station wagon, then climbed into the front seat and drove away. She sighed. âWhat a bloody mess.â
She pulled out her phone to make some calls.
