Chapter 19

Ami stared at the terminal as a face flashed on it. The image was grainy, almost certainly the result of the antiquated storage technology, but it was unmistakable. It was the strange man who had found her on the path. The man who gave her this drive and claimed to be her father. He looked less frantic (and less on the verge of death, Ami thought to herself), but it was him. Ami studied his features, his deep penetrating eyes, hoping, wishing for some memory or familiarity, but there was none. He was just a man. She sat back and listened.

“Amelina, though I understand you prefer Ami, this message is intended for you and only you. You were the only person with the password, a password that links us, and it will only play once. I highly recommend you not try to play it again. With that, I give you a choice. I have already taken so much from you, so it is now up to you. That you are watching this means I’m certainly dead, and I’m a man no one will miss, no one will grieve, and no one will even know is gone. That was my choice. If you, too, want to forget me and our chance encounter and get back to whatever normalcy you have in life, press cntl-alt-6. If you want to know the truth about who you are and where you came from, press cntl-alt-2. But know that doing so may put you in great danger. I never existed, and anyone that knows I existed is a threat. You may be pulled into a fight that isn’t yours, at least not really. But if you do, perhaps you can do something small to make a difference in the world. Like your mom tried.”

With that, the screen again went blank. The man told Ami she had a choice, but that wasn’t really true. There was nothing for her to go back to. Her parents, at least the people who raised her, were both dead, killed by the government. Her house had burned to the ground, and all of her possessions that weren’t in the basement of this old cabin were nothing more than smoldering ash. The thought of running to Mexico to find Jose crossed her mind as her dad suggested in her dream, but even if that was an option – and Ami seriously wondered how she could do that – she still wanted answers. She needed closure on this chapter of her life. With that, she pressed “cntl-alt-2” and waited. After a few seconds with an image of an old-fashioned hourglass, sand slowly draining from the top bulb into the bottom bulb, the man’s image flickered back onto the monitor.

“Ami, there is much to tell, and our time is limited. I wish I could sit down with you over a cup of coffee and explain everything. But that isn’t possible, never would have been possible. So please accept my apology for ruining your life a second time.
