Chapter 6

Garden Of Eden

Whatever her reasons for choosing Coffee Shop of Horrors I don’t know, but I’m excited, nervous, and uncertain. Not to mention I’m curious about this place. I’m not sure what her life had in store for her. I’m not sure about anything. But she said coffee, and I wasn’t about to object.

My day has only just begun and I need to chillax, to do some deep breathing. Meditate on my current situation if you will. Clear my mind. Since I’m not good at yoga, I figure what better place to shake the anxiety away than the Orlando Garden of Eden. The big magical kingdom fully equipped with a castle at dead center. The mouse and his little Mouseketeers. The local news changed the landfall time of the approaching hurricane to later tonight, so I went. If it rained a little, I wouldn’t melt.

After leaving our little get-together last night, I spent a good portion of the remaining evening writing a new body of lyrics. Not sure if the words are poetry alone or if they need music, but I wrote. Perhaps the essence of poetry crept back in because of my encounter with Faith last night. Maybe it was something that has been trying to claw its way out of me for some time. A chick pounding with its egg tooth, finally breaking through its shell. Perhaps it was all coincidence. Possibly I’m just full of shit, but I wrote. Not my best work admitted, but far from my worst. “Remnants” I call it.

Across the horizon ashes and debris.

The only remnants of what once was

When once we’re we.

Ruins remain that once stood tall,

But the path always pushes forward

Making giants fall.

Massive machines move mountains aside

Tearing down what walls we have built

Behind which we hide.

A spark ignites, and forests burn

But still, we keep on forward

Life lesson learned.

Smoke still lingers from fires now doused.

Reminding me of happier days

Before smiles turned shouts.

Across the horizon ashes and debris

The only remnants of what once was

When once we were we.

Maybe a waltz? Something sad and melancholy. With a touch of The Animals to give it a timeless feeling. Or just pass it off to Nick Cave and have him give it the life, emotion, and style that only he can. After all, he wrote an entire album called Murder Ballads, and that was after his song, “Loverman.”

As my forest green Grand Am comes to rest in the theme park’s overpriced parking spot, I look over and see it on my passenger seat. Right next to a small, old coffee stain from a few years back, a receipt. Not just any receipt, mind you. A receipt with a phone number: Viv’s number. I hold the torn edges of the crumpled paper in my hands, staring at it for a moment, thinking back to last night. The ecstasy and the agony of it. I pull out my phone and dial her number, deliberating if hitting send is the best idea I’ve had since moving here or the stupidest.
