Chapter nineteen
âDonât just hover in the doorway!â Violet laughed as Winnie and Angharad peered in at her like inquisitive children. âWe are fast running out of time and I cannot do this blessed thing up!â
âOf course! Sorry Violet.â The girls glided into the room, the hems of their skirts swishing around them as Winnie closed the door behind her and grabbed the bodice of Violetâs dress from where it hung on the back of her door.
âBefore we start, let me look at you both.â The girls came and stood next to each other as Violet gave them an appraising eye. Their dresses suited their personalities perfectly Violet thought. Angharad, who was a little less keen to be the centre of attention had opted for a subtle long-sleeved corseted bodice and long flowing skirt, itâs bustle nowhere near as cumbersome as the fashions of previous years. A pale green leaf design had been embroidered into the pale pink silk and she had small pink rose buds woven through her dark brown hair.
Winnie had opted for a pale green silk dress that was a stark contrast to her flame red hair. Cut into a deep V at the front and the back the gown had small puff sleeves that adorned a long tunic which opened at the front revealing a damask silk panel that completed the skirt. With cream roses in her hair that had been clipped into a chignon the dress was a perfect representation of her fierier persona.
âYou both look so lovely.â Violet said as she walked around them, making sure the decorations in their hair were fixed securely.
âWell, this is all down to you.â Angharad beamed at her. âWeâd be wearing our Sunday best or borrowing dresses from who knows where if you hadnât been so kind.â
âWell if I canât show you how grateful I am for your help every day then who can?â Violet said as Winnie turned her attention to the back of Violetâs skirt and corset and began lacing her in. âBesides, itâs not as if I can wear them all at once is it?â
Everything Violet had said was true of course. Both girls had been invaluable since she had taken on her new role within the home but it was so much more than that. Violet had heard so many stories about the servantâs ball. How it was frivolous but condescending. Generous but also a reminder of the divide between those who have and those who wish. Which had reminded Violet of a conversation she had had with Calissa about how cruel it must be to witness how easy the lives of the wealthy must be in comparison to her own presumed lacklustre existence.
âBesides which you are not my servants.â Violet reminded them. âWe are a team and you would do well to remember that. And moreover we are none of us born into this so we all go in as interlopers. Which means we need to make sure we do it in style. Show them that we are every bit their equals even if it is just in clothing.
