A recent study done by Thomas S. Dee from Swarthmore College, quoted in the Washington Post, found that the previously existing gender gap in reading performance between boys and girls could be reduced to nearly a third of what it was by having boys spend one year of English instruction with a male teacher.

Other distinctions between the ways that boys and girls learn may surprise you. As early as kindergarten, girls have developed faster processing skills, allowing them to score higher on timed tests and activities. Boys have a slower processing speed, which is better suited for problem-solving tasks as well as those that require more in-depth thinking as opposed to on-the-spot answers. You can also see this in the gender gap when it comes to reading fluency scores. In elementary and middle school, part of a student’s reading ability is measured by how fluidly they read. A boy’s slower processing speed may inhibit his ability to read aloud in these situations. This is something for parents to be aware of, as many young boys do not like reading aloud in class or at home for precisely this reason.
