Chapter Twenty Three
David returned home from the park with Josh lagging behind, trying in vain to master his football; kicking and missing, kicking and missing, and kicking and missing yet again. Once in the house, David told the kids to be quiet, grabbed the keys to the car, and took them out to his sisterâs house so they could play with their cousins. Leah needed some sleep to regain her energy.
That night, after a day of playing, talking to his sister, or resting, depending on the perspective of the day, the Armitage family seemed back to normal.
After Leah had rested, and David got home from his sisters, Leah busied herself preparing dinner for the family, while David checked his emails regarding prospective buyers, if not for Pure Cool itself, as least for some of the furniture and equipment. After dinner came the job of washing both the dishes and the children - in two different locations of course.
David washed the dishes, while Leah bathed the children; a job she elected to do because she felt she hadnât seen much of them lately. David had an email regarding taking over the lease of Pure Cool, so by the time he rang and arranged a time to meet with the prospective buyer, then did a few things around his office, it was time to go to bed.
As David and Leah lay in bed together reading it was their first time alone all day. David didnât know whether he should broach the subject of last night or not. Leah didnât know if David hadnât asked any questions because he was disinterested, or because he didnât want to know. Finally David put down his book and turned to face her.
âI didnât know whether you wanted me to talk about last night, or to leave it alone,â he said.
She shifted her head on the pillow so she could look at him. âIâm not sure either David. I donât know whether to say or not to say.â
âWho was it?â asked David.
âJust some business man who had flown into town looking for a bit of excitement,â she lied.
David turned onto his side and moved closer to Leah, placing an arm around her waist.
âOk,â he said in an, âIâm bracing myself for the worst toneâ, âtell me what happened, at least in summary.â
Leah didnât know what to say; in fact she didnât even know how to begin. How much detail was she expected to give, and if she didnât give any details, would that make her seem cold? Leah did what she always did when she was under pressure, she blurted out everything in one continuous stream of information.
âWell, you saw how I looked when I left. After that I went straight to the hotel. There was a party going on in the penthouse ballroom and my client was part of all that. My job was to accompany him as a partner. There was a band so we danced a bit. I had some wine for Dutch courage, and then we went back to his room, where we had sex.
