Live Like You Were Undead
Before their meeting with Blanc, Judd reviewed the itinerary with care. Then he organized the team to check in on Trick. He wanted to make sure the dratsie knew the SBI had been spotted near pack lands. He also wanted to gauge Trick’s reaction to that information.
In the café, Judd kept Colin close, not ready to let his mate out of touching distance. It was too soon. He had a wolf’s need to mingle their scents.
Colin didn’t seem to mind.
They made quite a stir, trooping into Bean There, Froth That early in the afternoon. Judd bumped fists with Tank, who was sitting at Colin’s table keeping an eye on the door.
Judd explained to Trick that Tank would remain on guard until he needed to leave for his bouncer duties. At which point, Bryan would relieve him. Trick was pathetically grateful to have a rotating werewolf in residence.
“Oh, darlings! You are all such peaches. Uh, pile of peaches? Peach trees? So much muscled peachy strong heroic goodness for little old me. Thank you.” He came out from behind the counter to chat.
“Tank is here for you no matter who shows up, SBI or selkie,” Judd reassured Trick.
“Though I’m no good against Alphas.” Tank’s rumble was embarrassed. “The SBI can take me. Sorry, Trick.” It obviously cost him to admit that.
Isaac bent and wrapped long arms around his mountain of a lover from behind. Held him hard and firm, dug his nails slightly into Tank’s arms. It was their way. Pain and dominance grounded Tank. Judd understood, even if it wasn’t his thing.
In reaction, Judd touched Colin. Back of wrist, to back of wrist. He was absurdly delighted when, instead of flinching, his Gingersnap looked up at him with a small smile.
Trick didn’t seem disappointed in Tank. “But if the blubber bozos return, you’re golden?”
Tank smiled. Nodded.
“It’s just the feds you can’t really handle?”
Judd didn’t like how scared the dratsie was of the SBI. Agents Faste and Lenis were a pain, sure, but they weren’t bad. That Trick feared them made Judd suspicious. Was the dratsie guilty? Was he in on it? Were the selkie onto something?
Then again, if Trick was from a crime family, he’d be raised to fear the authorities. Was this a manifestation of childhood trauma?
Judd went with the safest option. “Agent Faste is a bear shifter. So is Deputy Kettil, for that matter. Even if there weren’t Alphas involved, no single wolf can take down a bear. Not even one of Tank’s size. So just stay out of trouble, okay, little dratsie?”
Trick firmed up his small frame, flicked long lashes at Judd. Not fake today, but certainly augmented somehow. He’d done his eyes all big and dark, his lips faintly pink and glittering. Judd thought Colin would look hot with makeup like that.
“I won’t betray you, enforcer. I promise.” It wasn’t quite what Judd was after, but dratsie were tricky beasties.
Kevin added, “If you really haven’t done anything, the SBI should be fine. That said, unregistered, you don’t have legal standing in this area.
