Chapter 14 – Resolve

“Stand back,” Donovan said as he stepped in front of James and Catherine. “This isn’t a fight that you want.”

“We might be able to beat her if we work together,” James said, but Donovan shook his head.

“There’s a reason she was in charge. She’s like the warden at a prison. She has all of the power. You’ll just get in the way.”

“No!” James barked as he unsheathed his white and black eidolons. Donovan looked back at him for a second and then he elbowed James in the gut. James fell to his knees in agony as his eidolons disappeared.

“If I can do that to you,” Donovan sighed. “What help can you be?”

“You’re going to die,” James groaned as Catherine crouched down next to him.

“Our only way out is up,” Donovan said.

James’ eyes widened as Donovan sprinted forward, meeting Lana head on. They clashed with their fists, engaging in hand to hand combat. Donovan wasn’t as seasoned as she was though. He went for only killing blows while Lana focused on the end. If Donovan was the sprint, she was the marathon. She would slap him between parries or block one of his arms a little harder than she needed. She didn’t care if the blow hurt them both. Her tolerance and discipline toward pain was far greater than his.

She waited for her moment.

Donovan thrust his fist forward but there was too much weight put on his front leg. She swatted his attempt away and leaned backwards, forcing him to rock off balance. With one precise punch, she hit him in the chest, right where his heart was.

Donovan wheezed instantly as one of his lungs collapsed and then Lana went on the offensive.

Her aim was not to kill though she could have at any moment. She moved like a surgeon, making her strikes meaningful and full of purpose. She hit him in his solar plexus, both temples, the knee of his dominant leg and she quickly broke his right dominant arm. When she was done, she kicked him in the chest, once more knocking the wind out of him and sending him onto his back.

It was over before James had even caught his own breath.

“Now,” Lana said, clasping her hands together. “Can you two help me carry him out of here?”

“No,” James said, clutching his chest. He faced her boldly as he summoned his black eidolon. His sage robe manifested itself over him as he gripped the hilt of his blade. Lana was not impressed.

“You did see what I did to Donovan, didn’t you?”

“So what?” James said. Catherine grabbed his arm and yanked him toward her.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“He needs time to recover,” James whispered to her. “I’m going to give it to him.”

“But he can’t beat her.”

“That’s not the goal,” he said. “It’s the sky. I was too busy watching the fight so I didn’t take the chance, but I know you’ll succeed. You’re focused like that.”

“James, I’m not going to—”

James wrestled her arm back, pulling her violently close to him.
