Chapter Fourteen

Whoever said that life comes at you fast must have had children. Because despite the standstill her life had taken up at the cabin, Agnes could feel her priorities and motivations shifting and rushing like currents in a stream. Every day, some new revelation about June or herself redefined huge elements of Agnes’s psyche and eroded old concepts and beliefs.

Like when June explained that she had recycled aluminum cans to save up the money to complete her beloved Percy Jackson collection. Agnes was aware that soda cans could be recycled for money but had never given the matter much thought. She rarely encountered them in the course of her daily life. Most of Agnes’s beverages sparkled and were served on a tray by Melinda or a server.

Of course, the value of a can was very little so June had collected thousands of them and had saved for months. That alone was humbling because Agnes had never waited and saved money for anything. And she realized that was why so few things in her life had value. In fact, few things in her world—including the priceless gems and masterpieces in the Cameron Estate’s vaults—would ever be as valuable as June’s Percy Jackson collection.

As the days crept past, Agnes learned that in many ways June had lived and learned a hell of a lot more than Agnes in her short eight years on Earth. She obviously had a far better understanding of the value of money, budgeting, and the meaning of hard work. And she was far more streetwise because the world didn’t coddle or make excuses for her.

At least, it hadn’t. All of that would change now that June was a Cameron. Agnes wanted all that adoration and easiness for June after a life in the foster care system. But the child would always be more grounded than her mother and her cousins. Even with Fin’s down-to-earth, laid-back influence, the triplets would lack June’s experience with the harsher realities of a life that didn’t come with wealth and privilege.

Agnes’s upbringing had lacked any grounding, and she had been oblivious to her privilege until she’d met Connor at Tisch. He was the very first person to tell her to get over herself and that she wasn’t that special. It was what had made her fall in platonic love with him and why she knew he was perfect for Walker. But thanks to Connor, Agnes learned that she couldn’t trust people’s opinions because they’d always be corrupted by her status. That was why she could never trust anyone when they said her artwork was good. She had no idea what it was truly worth because her name and notoriety would always matter more than what was on the canvas or the pedestal.

June was wiser in ways that Agnes was only now beginning to grasp. And just when she thought she was catching up, June would transform and blow her away again. In the weeks since they arrived at the cabin, June had bloomed into an active, adventurous, and affectionate child brimming with confidence.
