WHAT MORNING BRINGS

Morning came, and the chameleons wondered which way to go. Sea Snake was still there. A rodent nose was poked out of his burrow, looking at them. Sandpipers and gulls were on the shore. It seemed like a crowd had gathered to look at these odd creatures.

“You’re pretty popular for being new around here,” said Sea Snake.

“I think it would be better not to be noticed,” said Little Lion. “How are you feeling this morning?”

“Better,” said Sea Snake. “But I’m tired, staying awake all night. Those rodents were really curious. But they’re going asleep now and I think I’m well enough to head out.”

“We’ll probably die when you leave,” said Little Lion.

“Sorry about that,” said Sea Snake. “But I need to go to the sea where I live. I’m still feeling some numb, but I’ve got to try. Are you sure you don’t have any friends?”

“Not around here,” said Little Lion.

“Too bad,” said Sea Snake. “No one survives long without friends.”

“But I can do one more thing. I can take you away from those rodents and see if you can find a safer place.”

The chameleons climbed aboard Sea Snake, who took them toward some bushes. The snake watched as the chameleons climbed the bushes.

“You should be safe for now,” said Sea Snake. “I hear something funny though, like a low rumbling. Could something be coming?”

The chameleons didn’t hear anything.

“Thanks for going out of your way,” said Little Lion. “We’ll survive a while longer. We owe you a favor. We would have helped you if we could.”

“It wasn’t much,” said Sea Snake. “It was an adventure for me to be on land. But I’ve had enough. I’m still weak, but I’ve got to try to make it to sea. That low rumbling ... it’s closer now, whatever it is.”

“Can’t you stay with us a little longer, Sea Snake?” asked Gurr. “Protect us from whatever it is.”

“Oh ... a little longer then. But you really need to find some land friends.”

The ground trembled, and even Sea Snake feared when a shadow loomed over him.

Suddenly, a snake form wrapped around Sea Snake and lifted him up. He thrashed, unable to get loose, wondering how another snake could hold him high above the ground.

“Are you messing with my friends?” a voice trumpeted.

“No ... no. I was trying to help guard them.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

The elephant was ready to dash the snake to the ground, but he heard Little Lion’s whistle. “Don’t hurt Sea Snake. He’s our friend!”

“What?” asked Flapper. “He’s one of the deadliest snakes in the world!”

“It’s true,” said Gurr. “He kept the rodents away all night.”

“Hmm,” said Flapper, setting down the snake.

“Wow,” said Sea Snake. “I thought you didn’t have any friends, much less a giant one with a long snake nose. And I was still wondering though, if you might ask him to help get me to sea.”

“Of course,” said Gurr. And the chameleons asked Flapper if he could toss the sea snake to sea.

“That I can do,” said Flapper.
