So now we know what we are: a band of criminals. A âgrowth on the body of the nation that must be burnt out and destroyedâ. Thatâs what it said in the newspaperâLanky read it. Anyway, thatâs how far weâve gone now.
It was Flintâs idea. About two weeks ago. âWe ought to do something really big,â he said. âNot just hiding leaflets in the bogs! Letâs climb the dome at the central station and rain them down on people from there. If it works, the whole of Cologneâll be talking about it.â
At first we thought heâd flipped. But he was so excited by the idea and kept on about it for so long that he talked us into going down to the station to have a recce. Heâd already been down there himself and planned it all out. Heâd do the most dangerous part himselfâclimbing up with the leafletsâhe explained. The rest of us should keep a lookout in case the cops turned up. Weâd need one of us in each corner of the main hall and two of us in the middleâso right underneath himâdisguised as a courting couple. The advantage of that was that they could see in all directions without attracting attention. If they stayed cuddled up it would mean all-clear. But as soon as they moved apart and started arguing, heâd have to take cover. That way they could warn him without immediately giving the game away.
The plan didnât sound bad but when we looked up into the dome, we still felt a bit sick. I thought, isnât this biting off a bit more than we can chew? The others had a few doubts too. But Flint was sure itâd work and cos Knuckles and Lanky were on his side, in the end we decided to go ahead.
We spent several days getting everything ready. Got the leaflets printed and hid them in the ruins of an old church. Then we spent as much time as we could hanging around the station to work out the best time for our plan and where weâd need to stand to keep everything in sight.
So yesterday was the day. We reckoned Tom and Floss would make the best lovers. Specially cos theyâve actually been a couple for a few weeks now. Flint reckoned theyâd have the advantage of not having to pretend. They could just do what they do all the time anyway. He grinned at me and I knew what he meant. Since Floss hooked up with Tom, you canât do a thing with the guy.
But then, the day before the action, Floss got sick. For a moment we thought about chucking it all in, but then we stuck to it cos weâd got everything so well planned and didnât want to leave the leaflets hanging around for longer than we had to. So Tilly said sheâd stand in for Floss. Tom reckoned that was OK but he still had the wind up a bit in case Floss got jealous of him fooling around with Tilly on the platform, even if it was only acting.
