Chapter 19
Samsonâs life improved drastically after the evening he spent with Catherine and her sisters. He was no longer confined to his room, and had been well enough to help with Fernadale and the other plants and flowers for over a week. Every morning as he awoke, he told himself it was time to find new accommodations. But every morning, instead, he met Catherine at the orangery, she opened it, and they cared for the plants together.
Samson was finally beginning to understand why Farnsworth had such a fascination with flowers. There was something fulfilling about watching them blossom and grow. Some flowers that had started only as little buds were now in full bloom. Fernadale, the largest of them, seemed to put on a show for them every morning.
Or perhaps Samson was slightly affected by the fact that Catherine was here, among the plants, whenever he was.
She had to be, since he had given her the key.
He plucked a ripe orange from the tree. It would be a special treat for Clara and Isabel. âIâve been well enough to help for over a week now. Donât you think you should return the key to me?â
Catherine looked up from the plant she had been inspecting for pests. âNo.â
That was it? Simply, no? Samson needed to work on that skill. No explanation, no justification, just, no.
He went back to work. He didnât have an argument in place for âNo.â
They finished their morning work and, as was their custom now, went upstairs to ready themselves for a short luncheon with Isabel and Clara. Mrs. Evans was typically busy at this time of day, so she allowed them to rummage the kitchen on their own.
They ate and then met in the small parlor to read, write letters, and memorize lines from plays. Thus far, they had only worked on Richard III. Isabel played Richard, of course, and Samson was, once again, cast as a horse.
No one rode him, though. They hadnât outgrown Shakespeare, but they had outgrown that.
Days continued on in a similar domestic manner. They continued to work on Richard III for two more weeks before they all grew tired of it. Almost every day he asked Catherine for the key back, but her answer was always the same. âNo.â
After a week of walks, letter writing, and no plays, Samson brought up the possibility of trying a comedy one night at dinner. Isabel sighed with relief. âIf I have to beg for a horse one more time, I donât know what I will do. Letâs start with Much Ado About Nothing.â
Isabel made it impossible to forget that she had been privy to him kissing Catherine while playing Benedict. Her persistence was astounding. For which he was grateful. There was nothing he would rather do than stop Catherineâs mouth with a kiss.
Clara clapped her hands and agreed. âBrilliant! Samsonâs overacting will be much less noticeable in a comedy.â
âOveracting?â Samson stood and threw his fork on the table. It sprang back up at him before falling to the floor.
