Rowen opened his eyes. Wyn Kai stood before him, at the very edge of the summit, armored and expressionless. The two Knights faced each other in silence. Rowen straightened as much as he was able and gripped the bamboo cage. The motion caused it to shift and sway. Rowen looked down at a thousand feet of darkness then back up.

“Good evening, Sir Kai. I trust you haven’t come here to set me free.”

Wyn Kai regarded Rowen for a moment then withdrew a small flask from his belt, stepped perilously close to the edge, and passed the flask through the bars of Rowen’s cage. Rowen accepted it and drank. Cold water cooled his parched throat. He intended to drink slowly and save some of the water, in case they decided to leave him there for days, but he drank it all instead. When he was done, he tossed the flask back between the bars.

Wyn Kai caught it and slipped it into his belt. He stared at Rowen a moment longer, still unspeaking, then turned to go.

Rowen said, “Wait. At least tell me what happened to Sang Wei and Maddoc. Whatever the Grand Marshal says I’ve done, they had no part in it. Set them free, and—”

“They’re probably dead by now.” Wyn Kai lowered his eyes to the ground. “Apologies, Sir Locke.”

As he walked away, the Knight snapped his fingers. Four more Knights emerged from the shadows, two holding staffs fixed with hooks. They caught hold of Rowen’s cage and dragged it forward. Another man unlatched it.

Before they could open the door, Rowen threw himself at it. He tackled one Knight in a tangle of arms and legs, but before he could get hold of the man’s sword, the other Knights seized him by his arms and dragged him backward. The first Knight rose, scowled, and drove one gauntleted fist into the side of Rowen’s head.

Wyn Kai’s voice cut through the sudden fog of pain and vertigo. “Enough. Cover his head again.”

Rowen struggled as best he could, but his captors bound his hands behind his back then succeeded in slipping the cloth bag over his head and lashing it with cord again. Rowen had thought they were using the bag he’d taken off and left in his cage, but this one smelled of onions. Also, his captors were not nearly as gentle as Sir Li. They tightened the rope around his throat until Rowen could barely breathe. Then, they shoved him forward. He stumbled but caught himself. He felt blood trickling from the side of his head where he’d been struck.
