"You thought you could just go off by yourself?" A woman's voice was nearly yelling from the other side of the door.

Darius recognized the voice and knew it meant trouble. He turned the knob, but the door was locked. He knocked firmly and took half a step back.

Aldaine pulled open the door and stood blocking the Elven Hunter from entering.

"Go away!" She slammed the door in his face.

Darius knocked again, as Gabriel appeared at the top of the stairs down the hall.

"Problems?" he asked.

"Of a sort," Darius replied, pounding now more firmly on the door.

Again, Aldaine opened the door; however, this time she held a dirk in front of her, "I said go away!" she ordered the Elf. This time she saw the other man in the hall, and a look of concern crossed her face as she again slammed the door.

"Elves," Gabriel said with a sigh.

"What?" Darius was shocked.

"You Elves are so high-strung at times," the mercenary said, surprising Darius. "Come into my room and have a drink. I've seen that look before, and you will not be getting into that room any time soon."

Gabriel opened the door to his room across the hall and led Darius inside. Pouring both men a glass of what passed as wine in this inn, he tossed his baldric on the bed and sat alongside.

"Would you care to explain what that was all about?" he asked the Elf.

"I'm sorry." Darius was still somewhat is shock. "You said, 'You Elves.' You think that I am an Elf? And the woman in my room?"

"Think?" The man was smiling now. "You and that woman are clearly Elves, my friend. Mary is human, though she has some Elven characteristics. I suspect the woman yelling inside the room is also an Elf, based on the timbre of her voice."

Darius was at a loss. He was standing with wine in one hand and his other on the hilt of his short sword. Gabriel did not appear even the least concerned as he sipped his wine and waited for an answer.

"I am not sure who you think we are—" Darius began.

"You are an Elf, and most likely an Elven Hunter. The woman who just slammed the door in your face is also an Elf; however, the way she was holding that dirk, she is probably also a bodyguard of some sort. Now she could be here to guard Mary, but since the voice inside was clearly challenging Mary's right to be here, I suspect that the bodyguard is for that woman, and not Mary. If I take this to the next logical level, the woman yelling at Mary is most likely Elven royalty. A distant relation to the royal family maybe, but more likely directly in line. Am I getting close?"

Darius removed his hand from his sword hilt and settled in a stiff-backed chair across the room from the mercenary.

"Your's are interesting guesses, but only guesses," he replied warily.

"You may continue to play this game if you wish, Brewster, but I assure you it changes nothing.
