CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE – WHISPERS OF REVOLUTION

I was right, that blanket was exceedingly warm. Considerably warmer than I was used to, but that only lasted for a short while. Soon enough, I cooled off and my body adjusted to a more normal sleeping temperature.

Almost immediately, I felt a hand on my shoulder and a voice near me saying my name. I jerked awake and sat up, knocking the man’s hand away as I did so. It took me a moment to realize where I was, but indeed, I was back home.

Once clarity had returned, I realized Allen had awakened me. I focused on him and yawned. I had no idea how long we actually had left before the official wake up time, but that mattered little anymore. I was getting nearly twice the sleep between the two worlds as it was, so losing a bit of sleep here would matter little. “What... what are you doing here?”

“Forgot already?” He smiled. “You wanted me to see if you vanished at night, remember?” He jerked a hand toward the door. “You were right, no alarms sounded when I entered, so no one cares if we enter each other’s homes.”

“Oh, right.” I recalled asking him to see if I disappeared when I went to sleep. Cerridwen had confirmed I did so in her world, so now I had confirmation I did it on both sides. What I was going to do with that information was an entirely different question. “So, I do, I suppose?”

“Sure do. Fascinating.” Allen’s eyes were shining. “So is this world of yours really that different from ours?”

“In ways I can’t even begin to describe. It nearly killed me this trip.” I shook my head and stood up.

“Killed you? How?”

“I nearly choked to death on the food.”

“On the food? Come on. You don’t choke on food.”

“Keep thinking that.” Grimacing, I watched as my food paste arrived for the morning. I didn’t know, nor care, if Allen had had his yet for the day. The smell of the stew in the other world still lingered in my nose, and though I’d nearly died trying to swallow it, what little I’d managed to taste was beyond anything I could describe.

This grey paste, by comparison, was as tasty as eating the dirt outside my hovel. But I had no choice. This was my only meal until tonight, so it was eat it or go hungry. I hurriedly wolfed it down and sighed. “So... now what? I don’t imagine you woke me up right before it was time to head to work, did you?”

“No, we have quite a bit of time.” Allen yawned. “Going to be a really long day because of it.”

I glared at him. “And you couldn’t let me sleep longer?”

“No, I woke you up the minute you appeared. I wasn’t sure if you were still alive or not.”

... huh. Well, that was comforting at least. I shook those thoughts out of my head. “I was asleep, not dead.”

“Any idea how you do that?”

“If I knew that, I wouldn’t come back.
