Through Fire and Flames

Kalindra had never been on a large-scale conflict before. She was a mercenary, a sellsword, and, at most, she had faced small groups of bandits or brigands, never an army. Fear was palpable among the nosferati in Breach as they waited for the Seeder contingent to advance. They weren't a large army–a few hundred at best, but fanaticism moved them and they knew how to kill the undead easily.

Rina landed on the expanse behind Kalindra, and she asked, "Are they coming?" The dragon lifted her head and nodded, releasing a wave of concern and, oddly enough, excitement. "You know what to do–these aren't hunters. They won't have weapons that can hurt you, but don't be overconfident.” Again, Rina nodded.

“Kalindra,” Lan muttered beside her, “are you sure about this? They’re misguided individuals, but not necessarily evil–they think they’re doing good.”

Kalindra shrugged. “Every wrongdoer thinks they’re doing good on some level. In fairness," she said, "We could try talking to them."

Lan sighed. “We’ve tried that before, in other towns.”

“And?”

Lan turned toward Kalindra, meeting her gaze and grimly muttering, "We’ve had to fight to get the ashes back.”

Kalindra frowned. Driven by their belief that nosferati are evil, refusing to see anything but what they’re told. She gritted her teeth as she watched the line of torches coming out of the woods. Madmen masquerading as thinkers and spiritual leaders.

At the front of the line walked a man dressed in a shabby robe, a perpetual scowl on his face. Behind him were bug-eyed people who regarded the outskirts of Breach with disdain, scorn, and fear. More of the Seeders stepped forth, and Kalindra saw they carried four gibbets on top of wheel-barrows, each containing a mutilated, gagged nosferatu.

She heard a cracking noise beside her and turned to see Lan glaring at the incoming seeders, his hands clenched on the wooden barrier in front of them. She returned her gaze to the gibbets. He is angry, and rightfully so. Such a thing… it’s just cruel.

The man at the front took a deep breath, wove an incantation, and his voice carried in the wind. "Devils of this wretched town, notice the words of the Matron herself! Step out of your wicked den and embrace her purifying flames!"

“Can you believe that guy?” Ayanna said snidely.“Fire burns–it doesn’t purify.”

“Tell that to him,” said Lan.

"We may," she turned toward Rina and nodded. The dragon returned the nod and soared into the air. “Lan, can you make my voice carry through the air?”

“I’m afraid my expertise extends only as far as not smelling as rot. My apologies.”

“I can,” Maya said beside her. “What do you need me to do?”

Kalindra nodded and said, "Sound is carried through the air. I need my voice to become loud and booming."

Maya clicked her tongue. “That won’t work.”

“I know, but it will do something else–it will instill some fear in them.”

Maya stared at Kalindra and nodded, weaving an Air spell to elevate Kalindra’s voice. “It’s done,” she said.

Kalindra nodded and sent a wave of determination through her bond with Rina.
