EXAMPLE 12: PIECEWISE BOUNDARY (LINEAR RELATIONSHIPS)

Some commonplace relationships between variables are linear. That is, the individual variables can be graphed (mapped to the number line) and the relationship between any two variables, x and y, can be described in the form y = a × x + b (or y > a × x + b), where a and b are numeric constants. Analyses of domain-testing selection rules have been widely published for linear boundaries (see, e.g., Beizer, 1995; Clarke et al. 1982; Tian, 2005).

The input domain of a function is the set of all points (x, y) that meet these criteria (Binder, 2000, p. 404):

• x and y are Floating-Point variables

• 1 < x ≤ 10

• 1 ≤ y ≤ 10

• y ≤ 14 - x
