I can’t do this.

Gavin dismissed the thought, even though it had been clamoring around in his brain since he’d looked past the bookshelf and seen Master S.—Simon—peering back at him.

Of course he could do it, it was his job. And he wasn’t a coward. Chris had called him that on more than one occasion, scolding him for sticking around, for not moving on. He’d only wanted to help, to do whatever was needed, and he knew Chris valued his support. But the accusation wasn’t empty, and he could hear it again as he considered walking right back out of the shop.

“Do it for yourself. Don’t wait for me. You need to get out there and take a risk.”

But this wasn’t so risky, was it? This was a business transaction. This was him doing what he did best, helping a sole proprietor stay afloat. Nothing to do with kink or sex, everything to do with spreadsheets and market analysis.

The coffee wasn’t bad. The accounting was atrocious. And the company . . . was enjoyable. Simon might be a Dom in the dungeon, but he was no hard-ass in the professional world. Just another guy with a business in trouble, who needed Gavin’s help. After a few awkward moments over the financials, he even cracked a joke at his own expense, and the ice broke. Simon explained what he wanted, his almost adorably modest vision for the store. Gavin saw almost instantly how to make it happen, how to get Simon where he wanted to be and then some. It would probably be his easiest assignment all year.

He could do this. And then he could walk away.
