According to Tessa, Dick already knew what the pendant was, as Christian fish signs were displayed in his neighborhood. If so, Dick had pretended not to know what the pendant meant, pretended to ask, and pretended to be edified by the delivery woman’s answer. Tessa conjectures that the pretense was a low-key attempt at seduction. If Dick played dumb, maybe he could engage the woman in a longer conversation. His plan didn’t work, though, and she left.

According to Tessa, Dick walked back to the bedroom, only to stop and cover his eyes. He was blinded by an overwhelming pink light. Some of Dick’s accounts portray the light as a beam, others as more of a flash. Tessa believes the evening sun reflected off a silvery bumper sticker in the window, blinding Dick and triggering pink phosphene activity in his eyes. Dick sometimes endorses Tessa’s version of the story, but elsewhere he says light reflected off the delivery woman’s pendant blinded him. In both versions of the story, Dick collapsed and had a succession of visions. First came a series of abstract paintings, followed by philosophical ideas and engineering blueprints. In addition to this intellectual smorgasbord, Dick also saw ominous imagery. In one scene, he was trapped in a limousine in Vancouver. He was surrounded by anonymous men in black suits who interrogated him, asking him questions he could not understand. After the vision ended, Dick conjectured it was a memory awakened when the pink light struck him. He supposed he had been kidnapped two years earlier when in Canada, and brainwashed by the men in black. Perhaps the scene was a symbolic representation of his indoctrination at X-Kalay in Vancouver. Dick was afraid that, like the character in the then-popular film The Manchurian Candidate, he was hypnotically programmed to commit an act of wrongdoing whose nature he could not discern until it was too late. Or, he was being menaced by demons. For several weeks, Dick spent much of his time in bed semiconscious, experiencing visions.
